SCI-Arc is a quarter mile bar building situated in the Arts District of Los Angeles. Through my personal experience being a student on this campus for the past four years, I thought of potential ways to make SCI-Arc more accessible. The line typology is restricting especially at its vast quarter mile length and limits the ways of entry for users.
For this proposal of the expansion of SCI-Arc, I decided to split SCI-Arc into two buildings. I was interested in adding student housing and informal meeting/lounge space. I placed a housing bar in between the split which bifurcates from the original SCI-Arc. This provides for a shortcut from the existing main entry of the school to the Santa Fe entrance on the opposite side. The portion that was cut contained the Keck Hall which is the main gathering space for lectures and school addresses. This Keck Hall was then relocated underground, connecting the two SCI-Arcs. As a result, students and occupants are able to go through the school without actually entering the building.
